You know the moment it happens. It’s like the perfect storm. You have a day with gorgeous weather, ending in that yummy, buttery light. You add to it a beautiful family and everyone’s feeling good! They look great. Mom has done a great job styling everyone’s outfits. It’s what we all dream of for every single session (I’m sure it’s what our clients are dreaming of as well). So, when all things come together and make for that sweet session, it’s like magic! This was one of those days.
What can we learn from this? We know that it doesn’t always come together perfectly, but how can you and your photographer/client work together to make the most of the opportunity? Planning. Sit down together with a cup of coffee, or even a good chat on the phone. Go over some of these helpful hints to plan a session that will be great for everyone.
1. Location, location, location. Pick a location where you and your family will be comfortable, where your kids can relax and be themselves, maybe even a place that has special meaning to you.
2. Timing. What time of day are your kids at their best? Does this match up with the late afternoon, which is the best time for this type of natural light to occur? If it’s not, then you location choice will be more important than every. Good light trumps just about everything! I try to encourage my clients to do what they can to work around that magical light time. This may mean an earlier nap, extra snacks- whatever it takes to help your little one feel his/her best during that time.
3. Style & clothing. What sort of look are you hoping to achieve? Does it match up with the photographer’s style that you have chosen? Hopefully, you’ve already been inspired by their work, so this is an easy one. Talk with your photographer about what type of clothing they suggest for the location you’ve chosen.
4. Pre-plan your purchases. I know that may sound weird, but if you know why you’re investing in child photography and what you plan to do with your final product, that will help both you and your photographer be better prepared. So, take the time and think about it. Do you want a wall gallery? Were you thinking a keepsake album? Gift prints for family for the holidays? I know that for me, knowing what my client’s plans are for the final products, helps me to shoot better for them.
So don’t be afraid. Sit and have a chat with your photographer. Plan your session well and be ready for making beautiful images together!
