Inspiration
The client. When she contacted me, she gave me the basics and I ran with the idea.. She said “I have a dream picture I’ve been keeping…” and I knew when she explained a woman in a white dress in a surreal forest location that is was something I could definitely work with.
Favorite Element
The location 🙂 Although it looks super remote in these photos, it’s hardly a short scramble down a rocky path and you’re where we’re standing. As a kid, I used to think the Pacific Northwest was “like, soooo boring”, but now as a photographer I live for the locations around me. There is a waterfall a short hike (through chest deep water) in the gorge directly behind the subject that I plan on revisiting in warmer months.
Biggest Challenge
Lighting. You might have expected “the cold” (because it was!) but Sharon was SUCH a trooper for these shots. Not one peep out of her. However, I’ve shot deep in canyons/rainforests a few times now and it always presents unique challenges. In many photos the subjects face is tilted up to the sky because it helps eliminate the harsh shadows and gloomy feel of the natural lighting.
What The Client Said
So far as I know, she adores them 🙂 “Thank you so much! They’re all soooo pretty!”
Photographers Last Words
Listen to your clients. Get them to tell you what they really want, so that you can give it to them. No ideas are too “out there” to be heard. This location was great for this client because her and her husband have an emotional connection to the area (he proposed right down the road!) so it already spoke to them. The key I think is finding that something that speaks to both you as an artist and the client as well.
