Session Share: At Home With Baby

August 9, 2011 | Posted by Dana Pugh

One of my favorite things about my job is returning to visit one of my families. I love watching them grow and change as people and as a unit. I met this family once before. We played in a field and their shy little girl slowly became my friend. By the end of the session, we walked to their car hand in hand.  When I arrived for this session, she once again took me by the hand and gave me her favorite book so that I could read to her. I knew that the session would be relaxed and truly capture this family at this moment in their history. This is a wonderful reason to build a relationship with a photographer. Children are much more at ease the second or third time around. It’s like welcoming an old friend into your home for a visit. This is exactly what this session felt like…like I was visiting friends who had just had a baby. I read stories with their daughter. We chatted about breastfeeding and nighttime feeds. We laughed at how tough it can be adding a second child and marveled at how wonderful it is as well.

From a photographer’s perspective, going back allows you a bit more creative freedom. You already know that they trust you on a deeper level than they did the first go around. If there is something you have been wanting to try, you know that because of this trust you can ask them to do it. I love that this family allowed me into their home this time. They now have a series of images that truly show where they are at this point in their life and the little details that just happen to be present–like the book on the coffee table was mommy’s favorite book as a child–these just add to the beauty of it all.

Inspiration: I always let the families I photograph inspire me. This family is both loving and fun. I was so thrilled when they decided they wanted a fun winter session.

Favorite Element: I absolutely loved the kids monster hats. I also loved that this family was up for anything–including getting covered in snow and, therefore, wet and cold.

Biggest Challenge: The weather was obviously the biggest challenge, but we managed that by dressing for the weather and choosing one location. I also made sure that we didn’t get wet and cold until we were pretty much done.

Final Words: Winter sessions are so fun and unique! I think so many people get caught up in the idea of having the perfect fall photos, but I actually think that winter sessions are the perfect opportunity to create some fun, fabulous, and completely different photographs.

    Session Share: Family Mini Session

Inspiration: The light.  Warm, buttery backlighting at sunset.  It doesn’t get any better than that.

Favorite Element: The belly.  It’s an added extra element that speaks so loudly of love and hope and magic.

Biggest Challenge: The timing.  Sunset is always challenging because the shooting window closes so quickly.  Also, mini sessions are typically only around 20 minutes, so we work fast!

What Clients Said: “These are so, so, so wonderful.  I have watched the slide show about a 100 times today.  And the song!  ….I want to buy the digital collection.”

Final Words from Photographer: This family sums up my experience so far in Austin.  Beautiful people, beautiful children, beautiful sunsets.

    Remember the Little Things

Life is busy. Life with children can seem more like organized chaos at times:-). Between school drop offs and pickups, laundry, obligations at work, sports activities, homework, birthday parties, and the oh-so-necessary dinners with good friends, it’s easy to place “photograph the kids today” at the bottom of the list.  As a mom of two, and a children’s photographer, I can completely understand how the documentation of daily life tends to get pushed aside.  While most of us recognize the importance of recording the milestones in life with photography, oftentimes the day-to-day moments get overlooked- as if they don’t warrant as much attention.  And yet, so many times it’s the spaces in between the big moments that yield the fullest memories.

As my children get older I’ve started to realize how much I cherish the “everyday” images of them- the ones that truly depict our life….as chaotic as it may be at times.

While I adore our “real” portrait sessions and couldn’t bear to be without the images from them, I also treasure the impromptu shots I’ve taken of my kids being, well, kids…. in their dress up clothes, making that “face” they always make, hiding in the pots and pans drawer, snuggling with the neighbor’s dog….  Sure, their clothes don’t match, and more likely than not they have food, or dirt, or both, on their face, but in 20 years I know that I’ll look back on those images and remember….and isn’t that what photography is all about?
