Inspiration: I love capturing the everyday real moments. My inspiration always comes from wanting to tell the stories about our lives. I had no expectations before arriving, only that I wanted to capture newborn Eric just as he was, fresh and sweet.
Favorite Element: I love the simple, serene room, with its soft white bedding and beautiful window light. It made a perfect setting for capturing newborn Eric in a natural and simplistic way.
Biggest Challenge: Most newborns sleep for a portion of a session. Eric was not sleepy even with all our efforts. With a full belly he had some quiet time on the bed while I photographed him. I was pleased that he was such a sweetheart.
Photographers’ Final Words: Having a newborn in the home is such a precious time in a family’s life. I am happy to have given this family these memories, memories of this new love in their life.

Daily Moments! Capturing real everyday family life is my biggest inspiration as a photographer.

One of my favorite things about my job is returning to visit one of my families. I love watching them grow and change as people and as a unit. I met this family once before. We played in a field and their shy little girl slowly became my friend. By the end of the session, we walked to their car hand in hand. When I arrived for this session, she once again took me by the hand and gave me her favorite book so that I could read to her. I knew that the session would be relaxed and truly capture this family at this moment in their history. This is a wonderful reason to build a relationship with a photographer. Children are much more at ease the second or third time around. It’s like welcoming an old friend into your home for a visit. This is exactly what this session felt like…like I was visiting friends who had just had a baby. I read stories with their daughter. We chatted about breastfeeding and nighttime feeds. We laughed at how tough it can be adding a second child and marveled at how wonderful it is as well.
From a photographer’s perspective, going back allows you a bit more creative freedom. You already know that they trust you on a deeper level than they did the first go around. If there is something you have been wanting to try, you know that because of this trust you can ask them to do it. I love that this family allowed me into their home this time. They now have a series of images that truly show where they are at this point in their life and the little details that just happen to be present–like the book on the coffee table was mommy’s favorite book as a child–these just add to the beauty of it all.

As you prepare for a baby you float through 9 months of expecting life to change without knowing exactly HOW it’s going to change. Especially if the baby is your first. It’s a special time of life, although, it is often overlooked in it’s importance to photograph. There are just too many easy excuses to skip a maternity session with growing waist lines and lists of other things to purchase (including your newborn and possibly birth sessions). However, with each of my newborn and birth clients I highly recommend the Mini Maternity for several reasons. The biggest reason being the importance of this time that will no longer exist when baby gets here. If the baby is your first, the last weeks/months of your pregnancy mark the last that you and your partner will be on your own, the days of just the two of you are numbered and believe it or not you are about to change in ways that aren’t even comprehensible. If it’s a sibling, it marks the last time you’ll be just the 3, 4 or 5 of you for the rest of your lives. It’s a special time, and although a time when you might not want 2 whole hours of photos…it is a time when a few images captured of your life before baby will be treasured as much as those first images of their sweet wrinkled feet and sleepy eye lashes.

The mini maternity session also provides the perfect atmosphere for mom and dad to get to know their newborn/family photographer. In a few weeks this photographer will come into your home and you will entrust the most precious and valuable of times to them to capture. When you meet and get to know your photographer subsequent sessions will fall into a comfort zone more quickly, allowing your newborn session to take place with less stress for new parents and a greater confidence in your photographer’s ability to really get and capture you.

Inspiration:
We were getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year 2011 and along with it, came the time to buy new clothes and things for the household. So, we bought for our little girl a few Chinese cultural attires as part of the preparation for the new year. I make it a point to have special sessions for my own little girl for special occasions: birthday, family trip, first hair-cut and this celebration is no exception.
Favorite Element:
The location. We’re lucky to have such a beautiful park in the midst of the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur. I shoot there every so often but there’s always a new angle or spot which we can use as a natural backdrop. Oh and the morning sun there is just BE-AU-TI-FUL!
Biggest Challenge:
Getting some expressions out of my toddler. She was busy exploring the outdoor and that kept her facial expression in a very concentrated and serious state. So what did I have to do? Sing some of her favorite nursery rhymes! One of them was the “If you’re happy and you know it, say Ha! Ha!”. That kept her all excited alright!
Photographer’s Last Word:
We also brought along some props to compliment the session, some Mandarin oranges (one of Chinese New Year’s common elements), “ang-pow” packets, my favorite white bicycle and a few colorful umbrellas. It was a tough job carrying them but they’re all worth it!
I’m going to have some of the images printed on wall canvases to decorate our living room pretty soon. They’ll always bring back some sweet memories of our special time together.
About the Contributor:
I wear plenty of hats in my life. I'm a mother to a fiesty-sweet toddler girl, a wife to a grizzly-soft of a man, a daughter to a strong-willed mother, and a self-taught female photographer.
Sleep deprived but happy. That's who I am for now.

If you follow my blog you probably know that my four year old son was diagnosed with cancer when he was 9 months old. Neuroblastoma to be exact. A few weeks ago I had the chance to photograph a sweet little guy who is just about the same age as my own son. His name is Nathan and he has the sweetest smile. And the most contagious laughter. And an incredibly loving spirit. Nathan loves trains. And his mom and dad. And even his little sister. Nathan is also battling Neuroblastoma. He has undergone 6 rounds of chemotherapy, tumor resection surgery, 2 stem cell transplants, radiation, Accutane, and CH14.18 antibodies. To say that he is a fighter is an understatement. Nathan’s end of treatment scans were scheduled for the end of November and the results that came in showed no evidence of disease! I think 2011 is going to be a great year for this little guy and his sweet family.
