Why Purposeful Partnerships Matter to NAPCP

This story is part of NAPCP’s Purposeful Partnerships series, highlighting photographers who use their work to support nonprofit organizations and meaningful causes.

At the National Association of Portrait & Child Photographers (NAPCP), we believe photography has the power to do more than create beautiful images — it can also create meaningful impact. Through our Purposeful Partnerships initiative, we celebrate photographers who donate their time, creativity, and expertise to support nonprofit organizations and charitable causes.

These partnerships help tell important stories, elevate missions, and provide families and communities with images that preserve hope, resilience, and connection. Across our community, photographers are stepping forward to use their craft for good.

One photographer and NAPCP member doing exactly that is Miho Grant, whose work with Michael Feeney’s Best Day Ever reflects the powerful role photography can play in uplifting others.

Photographing Hope with Michael Feeney’s Best Day Ever

Miho Grant’s connection to the organization Michael Feeney’s Best Day Ever is deeply personal. Michael attended the same elementary school as her children before tragically passing away from malignant brain cancer while in fifth grade.

In response to this devastating loss, Michael’s mother created the nonprofit to ensure that children battling cancer — especially those facing financial hardship — could experience something joyful: a complimentary birthday celebration dedicated entirely to them.

Through these celebrations, the organization creates moments of joy for children who are facing incredibly difficult circumstances.

Miho knew she wanted to help.

By volunteering her photography services, she became part of the team capturing the magic and emotion of these unforgettable days.

A Photography Experience That Changes the Photographer Too

One event in particular left a lasting impression on Miho.

She arrived expecting to donate her time and talent — something photographers often do for charitable causes. But what she experienced that day changed her perspective.

Every person involved in the event was volunteering out of love for Michael and the mission his family created in his memory. The atmosphere was filled with generosity, compassion, and heartfelt purpose.

Miho recalls leaving the event feeling transformed.

What she discovered was simple yet powerful:
giving can be one of the most rewarding experiences a photographer can have.

In her words, the volunteers and families she met taught her something profound — that sometimes, when we give, we receive far more in return.

Approaching Nonprofit Photography with Professionalism

One of the things Miho emphasizes is that photographing nonprofit events deserves the same level of professionalism as any commercial assignment.

Her preparation process remains exactly the same.

She brings the same attention to detail, the same commitment to quality, and the same respect for her subjects. The goal is always to deliver meaningful, beautiful images that honor the experience.

For events that take place in darker indoor venues or crowded environments, Miho relies on dependable flash lighting to ensure she can capture important moments clearly and professionally.

These technical decisions help ensure the organization receives images they can use for storytelling, fundraising, and outreach.

Telling the Stories That Matter

For Miho, the most important part of philanthropic photography is storytelling.

Many nonprofit organizations operate quietly, fueled by passionate volunteers and supporters working behind the scenes. Photography helps shine a light on those efforts.

Her images aim to capture:

  • The joy of children being celebrated
  • The dedication of volunteers
  • The compassion of families supporting one another
  • The mission behind the organization’s work

Through photography, these stories can reach a wider audience — inspiring others to support the cause.

Continuing the Mission of Giving

Miho’s volunteer work doesn’t stop with one organization.

She also supports Family Promise of Bergen County, a nonprofit that assists families experiencing homelessness by providing temporary housing and resources to help them rebuild stability.

For Miho, philanthropy through photography has become an ongoing commitment — one that allows her to use her artistic talents in service of something greater.

Why Photographers Should Consider Giving Back

At NAPCP, we see again and again how photographers can make a real difference in their communities.

Volunteering photography services can help nonprofits:

  • Share their mission visually
  • Document meaningful events
  • Strengthen fundraising efforts
  • Connect emotionally with donors and supporters

At the same time, photographers often discover that these experiences are deeply fulfilling and creatively inspiring.

Miho’s story is a reminder that photography can be both an art and a powerful act of service.
