14 May Inspiration: Fourteen: A Styled Shoot Shared Birthday Party, with Lisa Turner Photography
While the big focus these days is on high school senior photography — an often overlooked market is tweens and teens. In the Instagram-centric world of this generation … pictures are king. This age group is literally obsessed with photos: selfies, styled shoots, you name it. So if you are looking to stretch yourself creatively, or possibly branch into a new market, girls aged 12-16 are more than willing to participate. It’s much easier than when my girls were 3 and 5 and I had to bribe them for one decent picture!
On that note, I want to share my daughter and her friend’s 14th birthday party. When your daughter turns 14, you are kind of tapped out of birthday ideas. We have done it all. So I had a thought — what if we hire a make-up artist to make these girls feel really pretty and special, and then do a photo shoot? And so we did … and it was a HUGE hit.
I have a shared studio space, and since the weather is typically cold and snowy in February, we did the shoot there. One of the benefits of our shared space is a fantastic collaboration of not just photographers; we have makeup artists, massage therapists, life coaches … so I knew where to look to find a make-up artist for us! Our MUA (make-up artist) was so sweet with the girls, and her attention to detail was unbelievable. She worked so hard to make sure each girl looked their best! And when each girl had her “reveal”, and saw her new look for the first time … priceless.
