Urban Photo Sessions

If you are hiring an “on-location” photographer, it’s possible that they might suggest an urban session. Don’t be scared, it won’t be hip hop dancing on a downtown street corner. Unless you want it to!
Urban sessions have become quite popular in the last few years, getting their inspiration from magazines, wedding photography, children’s clothing catalogs and plain old real life! Urban locations are great for a number of different types of sessions. Maternity, baby, child, family, you name it and it can work in an urban setting.
When I suggest an urban session to a client, I am envisioning funky brick buildings, cool clothes, graffiti, sidewalks, back alleys, streetlights, bright colors and more. Urban sessions are so much fun for both the photographer and the clients. The photographer gets to have a variety of looks, backgrounds and moods in one location. The client gets a varied amount of images, and a really fun day for the family!
When preparing for your urban session, think about clothing choices that are a little funkier, a little cooler. Fun hats, jeans, sassy sunglasses, fabulous high top sneakers are all great looks for an urban session. What’s great about a city location is that there are so many different looks in one place. You could even have some vintage style clothes or sweet sundresses to make your kids really pop from their grungy surroundings.
When I do my urban sessions, I take my clients on a tour of the area. We shoot along the way, stopping here and there when we see a cool looking spot. It truly is a fun family outing, and a great way to spend a Sunday morning, walking around getting to know your city.
For your next photo session, try something a little different and suggest an urban session to your photographer! It will give you a great addition to your family portrait collection.
